The charity behind a new £8 million care home in Leamington has been given a first look at its new building.
MHA – one of the country’s leading providers of care for older people – will lease and manage the new 50 en suite bedroom complex which is being created on the site of the former Abbacourt Hotel, on Kenilworth Road.
The new home, developed by Earlplace, is retaining the two façades of the former hotel and will feature a range of modern facilities including communal lounges, hair salon, dining rooms and gardens.
MHA currently has a home just a few hundred yards away and residents and staff will move to the new building when it is completed early next year.
Pat Dean, Home Manager for MHA, said the residents had been following the building’s progress carefully.
“We have been giving our residents regular updates on the progress of the project and they are just as excited as anyone who is having a new home built just down the road,” she said.
“It is great the see how the work is progressing and I think everyone is just looking forward to seeing it all completed as it will offer far better facilities for the people we care for.
“We have the plans available at our current home so everyone is well aware of the features of the new home. MHA has provided care to older people in the current building since the early 1950s so it is wonderful to be able to continue our care in a purpose-built environment.”
The new home has been designed by Robothams Architects of Warwick and G.A.J Construction of Coventry is carrying out the construction.
Lawrence Grove, Chairman of Earlplace, said interest in the home had grown since the advent of the roadworks on the Kenilworth Road.
He said: “The Abbacourt Hotel was a real fixture on the Leamington scene and a great number of people knew it. I think they were aware that we were undertaking a major project, and thousands of drivers have had plenty of time in recent months to see what we are doing!
“There was a real need for a care home of this standard in Leamington. It will give residents dignified surroundings with on-site care, and we know that they are keeping a keen eye on our progress. They will certainly not be disappointed.”
Earlplace is becoming a specialist in the provision of new care facilities and have sites in various stages of development in Stratford-on-Avon and Bristol. In Leamington itself they have been involved with many properties on Parade, including Clarendon Court, and with buildings in Holly Walk.
